Margaret was born with cerebral palsy. For the last 12 years she has lived in a subsidized high rise in River North. The entire time Margaret has lived here she has used a wheelchair, even though the building is not wheel chair accessible. She has few friends in the city, and her cat Midnight is her only family.

One day Margaret received an eviction notice for "poor housekeeping."

She had no where to go.

Margaret's neighbor, John, heard her talking in the elevator about her possible eviction. He directed Margaret to Uptown People's Law Center. Our lawyer Nicole pointed out that Margaret's apartment was in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

After speaking with Nicole, the landlord agreed to renovate the building to make it wheelchair accessible, and provide Margaret and Midnight a unit to stay in while the remodeling work was done.

The remaining problem was Margaret's cat. Midnight did not do well with strangers, and had never been outside of Margaret's apartment. Nicole and John worked with a veterinarian to obtain some cat sedatives, and Nicole went to Margaret's apartment to move the cat with John's help. While Nicole got some arm scratches, the move otherwise went according to plan.
